My Favorite Paint Colors

Melissa at 320 Sycamore is having a My Favorite Paint Color party! What a great idea! Get on over there and check out all those great paint colors!

So, my favorite paint color. Let me start by saying that my favorite color is green. I like every shade of green but hunter. It is only good at Christmastime! Now let me add that finding a great green paint color is very difficult for me. But I have succeeded! When we bought our house seven years ago, this family room is what made us fall in love with the house. We obviously fell in love with the room's potential, NOT the paint color!

About two weeks after moving in (and after some painting acrobatics and shaky knees on a tall ladder), the family room looked like this . . .

I loved it instantly. From the first swipe of the roller. It is Laura Ashley Olive 4.

And seven years later, after adding 2 kids, new furniture, new fireplace tile, new hardwood flooring and window treatments, the room is still this color, and we still love it! To me, it is the perfect green--not too sage and not too apple. Here is our family room today . . .

I have found some other great greens for my house as well . . .

We used Laura Ashley Apple 3 in our first son's nursery:

Before our second son arrived, the guest bedroom was also green--Restoration Hardware Sycamore Green, which was a greyish-green:

And we have Behr Grass Cloth in our basement playroom. It looks great with black accents:

We used a green on the same swatch as Grasscloth in our kitchen. It is Behr Corn Husk Green:

So, those are some of the green paint colors I have used. I swear, there are other paint colors in my house! But they are neutrals, which I think are also difficult to find good shades of! But that's a whole other post!

Enjoy the party at 320 Sycamore!

  1. You are a girl after my own heart. I love green and worry about using it too much. I am so glad that you added that. I have Olive 2 on my walls from the same Laura Ashley line. My sister used 6 (or whatever the darkest one was) on her walls. It looks black, with a green tint. Beautiful colors.

  2. Shelly~this post is perfect timing! I seriously have grasscloth and cornhusk paint swatches in my laundry room as we speak! I want to do something with black and white accents and this just may be my answer! I have hardly any natural light in there though and I'm wondering if the grasscloth may be too dark. I love LA olive 4 as well, and you just can't go wrong with RH colors either. Thanks so much for sharing all of these and for joining the party!

  5. Shelly, I love your greens. My favorite color is red and that is in my office. But I have a green bathroom. Also my foyer, hallway, stairwell, and upstairs hallway are all green. Even my sofa is green. Maybe my fave should be green instead of red? Nope! Definitely red! LOL

  6. I love your choice in green colors, especially the striped room... I love yellow! I made the mistake once of painting a room hunter green and then I had to repaint. Your choices of green are perfect. you have a beautiful home.

  8. Beautiful colors! Olive 4 is exactly the shade of green I've been searching for! It looks fabulous in your family room, especially after all this time. When I paint I want it to be something I can live with for many years! I do not enjoy painting...which is why I haven't even started yet in our new house, it's a blank canvas!

    paint.

  29. LOL...we just put up Grass Cloth in our family room and guess what? Our kitchen will be Corn Husk pretty soon! LOL! Oh and I had planned on using black accents for the Grass Cloth, so it is nice to see a sneak preview :)

  31. Wow... loads of green! I love the color in your living area, but don't think I could do it in that many rooms of my house... maybe as an accent though. Your house looks beautiful even though it's too much green for me :)
