Halloween Costumes from Years Past

It has been a joy to plan costumes for Halloween each year, then see the boys all dressed up. I love that they seem to enjoy it all as much as I do!

Halloween 2008

Simply said, I love Halloween. It makes me sad that our overly PC world has to take the fun out of everything. I remember loving Halloween as a kid. Our elementary school was laid out in a giant circle, and we would parade around the building by grade level. It was so fun. Then there would be a huge costume contest at the football field in the evening. I can't remember if it was before or after trick-or-treat. My Mom made great costumes! And in years' past she has done the same for my boys. She made the most amazing Peter Pan and Captain Hook costumes in 2007. In 2006, I had the cutest Tin Man and Cowardly Lion (our neighbors were Dorothy and the Scarecrow). So this year, I gave her the year off. In September, we were looking at ideas for costumes online, and Jacob found a UPS Guy costume, and that was it for him. He never changed his mind. Our local Party City had it in stock. It was the easiest costume for me to date! Gavin is the waverer. He couldn't decide between Diego or a firefighter. I kept looking at both online, and watched the only cute Diego costume come and go on ebay before Gavin could decide. Once he did decide on firefighter, I didn't have long to find something. I hate cheap costumes, but nice firefighter costumes are crazy expensive. The cheapest I could find online was $48. Way too much! I finally looked in the dress-up section of Toys-r-us and found a nice one for $20. Sold! The helmet was fabric and looked like a witch's hat, but we already had a cute helmet that John's parents had bought for Gavin over Labor Day weekend. My last idea was boots, but decided that he would be too uncomfortable. For a treat bag this year, Gavin used a bag he had made at preschool, which had his handprints painted like candy corn. I had a moment of genius in creating a treat bag for Jacob. I made our UPS guy a package, complete with spooky Halloween addresses! My moment of genius for Gavin was using grey eye shadow for soot on his cheeks and nose. We had a fun time at our church's Trunk-n-Treat and in our neighborhood on Halloween!
