Get on over to
Thrifty Decor Chick's Spray Painting Party! She has some great samples of spray painting projects and lots of others have posted their projects as well! I am not an expert spray painter, but I have tackled a few big projects quite successfully.

We got the above table & chairs at IKEA. It was unfinished wood, but after a few coats of black spray paint, it became . . .

This! A great coloring table in our playroom.

I bought this wicker chair at Big Lots about 12 years ago! It was a lighter wood color, but after some spray paint . . .

. . . a great chair in the playroom! I also spray painted the peg rack and the toy box in the picture. The toy box was mine as a child, and it was quite beat up before. After some paint and some new fabric on top, it looks brand new!

This rocker has been on our front porch since we moved in seven years ago. It came from Cracker Barrel! After a few years, the paint started cracking and peeling, so . . .

. . . we spray painted it black (caned seat and all) and I like it even better now!

The last project was the biggest and scariest. I had a Lane cedar chest that was VERY country. I just didn't have a place for it in my decor anymore, but I stored all my off-season clothes in it, and really didn't want to part with it. So, after much thought and a few deep breaths, I did it!

Now, it sits in a primo spot at the foot of my bed, and I love it! I added the monogram with the vinyl letters from Uppercase Living. This was by far my best project!
I am so glad that I found your site!! I am READY to paint my cedar chest as well. Will you mind telling me how you did it? Thank you so much. You can leave me a comment on my blog. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteAll of these look great!! I have a toy chest from when I was little and it stores blankets but it is looking a little beat up. I never thought to spray paint it...I hope mine turns out as nice as yours! Good job.
ReplyDeleteHow fantastic!!! I love spray paint also but those types of projects are scary because they are so big. I might have to see what I have around that can be sprayed!!!
ReplyDeleteA little (or a lot!) of spray paint really can bring new life to a piece. The wicker chair and caned rocker were actually easier to spray paint than with a brush or roller because of all the nooks and crannies. We used a roller to prime and basecoat on the other pieces, but I love the no brushstroke look of spray paint, so the final coat on those pieces was sprayed. You could also use a hand sprayer that draws the paint from a can of latex paint, or I have been reading a lot lately about using a small foam roller to eliminate brush marks or that textured look that a regular roller pad makes.
ReplyDeleteI am soooo loving your patio! I know we are supposed to be looking for the spray paint, but I can't resist a cute patio like that. And your rocker on it is way too perfect for it. It does look so much better spray painted!

Love the wicker chair, and the double rocker, and the chest, and..... Very cool ideas.
ReplyDeleteLove it all, especially that chest! Do you know how much that would cost to buy? Love it!
ReplyDeleteamazing transformations...I love me some black spray paint!
ReplyDeleteI am so in love with your front porch! My dream house will have a big wrap-around porch with pretty rockers!
ReplyDeleteWe have that same kids set from Ikea (you just can't beat the price!) - our was red, then white and now it is pink for my daughter.
That monogrammed chest is amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteI just found your post here and I have the EXACT SAME cedar chest from Lane and have been wanting to paint it black as well but I am so afraid of ruining it completely. Could you please post how you did it in the comments? I am assuming some sanding, priming and then painting? LOVE the idea of adding the Uppercase Living too ... genious!
ReplyDeleteI sanded, primed and painted with a regular roller, then sprayed the top coat. However, if I were to do it again, I would use a small foam roller instead, including for the top coat. I just painted my kitchen cabinets (see post above) and used the small foam roller. No marks on the top coat! Sherwin Williams makes a great paint for wood called Pro Classic. It comes in both latex and oil-based. It's great for minimizing brush & roller marks. If you think about painting it every time you look at it like I did, then I say go for it! Good luck!
